WHY mindful hiit & yoga?
Statistics show that work-related stress cost the UK economy around £6.5bn in 2015.
In 2018/19 12.8 million working days were lost to stress related illness, depression and anxiety. Stress accounted for 44% of all work-related ill health cases and 54% of all working days lost due to ill health. This could just be the tip of the iceberg as these figures only include those who have recognised that their ill health is related to stress. Low level stress could possibly account for more ill health and lack of productivity than can be shown in the official figures.
UK companies lost on average 23.5 days of productivity a year due to a culture of pressure and inactivity.
HIIT is a time efficient and effective way for people to increase fitness levels and has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety.
Yoga combines mindfulness with movement and has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
The effects of HIIT on mental health
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) can have a positive effect on mental wellbeing by increasing production of serotonin or norepinephrine – neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout your nervous system. In the case of intense exercise these messages help create a positive feeling – ‘the post-workout euphoria’ which many experience.
Helping you cope
Studies suggest that it’s not just that exercise leads to an increase in serotonin and norepinephrine which may, in turn, reduce depression and stress. Exercise may actually help ward off depression and anxiety by enhancing the body’s ability to respond to stressors of all types, physical and emotional.
Yoga for stress reduction
Multiple studies have shown that yoga is effective in reducing the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol. Studies have also found that practicing yoga for at least 3 months may lower perceived stress and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines that can cause inflammation.

Concentrating on dynamic movement during the HIIT session focuses the mind and allows participants to forget their physical distractions as they move into the mindful yoga phase of the workout.
